So, my friends and I have all these Dungeons & Dragons 3.5ed books laying around. Let’s make the most of them, we thought! We never got to try high-level play, so this time, let’s start at level 20! I voulenteered as GM and gave each player 200 000 xp and 750 000 gold, to spend as they wished, all official material allowed!
The mission? Save the world? Kind of, more like “Save this plane of existence”! The story is: a plane is about to collide with our own. We think some spell is causing it to happen. In an underwater fortress, the expert magician Drawmij lived. He was an expert on summoning and there’s a rumor he wrote a book called “Drawmij’s tome of extraplanar summoning”. This book, if any, should have the information necessary to stop this spell that threatens to end all life as we know it.
The four players are,
- Malik – the mysterious rogue
- Blenyc – the druid and animal rights activist redundancy
- Malevor – the powerful and self-suficient archmage
- Magnus – the mystic theurge manipulating magic itself and not at all being subtle about it
They met with the leaders of the world, who had agreed to put differences aside for a while to save their collective asses. There they got a report from the magic department of the capital city of Vener detailing the situation and a summary from the High Commissary. They could name their reward and did so cleverly. They were then dispatched to the harbour city of Port Lux, and given use of its resources to prepare for descending the deep waters and enter the fortress.
Lessons learned? Well, high-level mages are insanely powerful. The ‘Wish’ spell means trouble. Some of the 3.5 rule books are a bit over the top, powerwise. For our next round I decided to limit the rules to the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org). Do make sure that you read their character sheets before you start play, in case they have interpreted rules to be what they want them to be or found extreme legal combos.
